Handcrafted by a silversmith in Indonesia, this elegant 925 sterling silver collar choker, decorated with the traditional art motifs of Bali, exemplifies the island's rich silver artistry for which it is renowned. Accents in 18K gold layering bring a beautiful contrast. The antique, darken patina finish gives an unique look that definitely will get you noticed.
Although light in weight, it is not flimsy and stays in place. The piece slides on and off easily, and is secured with hook-style clasp on the back. Measures 18" from clasp-to-clasp; inside diameter 6" vertical x 5" horizontal.
The modern day "collar choker necklace" is also traditionally known as a torc. A torc, also spelled torq or torque, is a large, usually rigid, neck ring made from metal. While some authors report that the torc first appears in Scythian art from the Early Iron Age, torcs of Achaemenid influence were well known in Asian jewlery long before they made their appearance in Scythian art.
The torc was subsequently introduced to Celtic Europe around 500 BC. Torcs were a sign of nobility and high social status and possibly a divine attribute, since some depictions of Celtic gods and goddesses wear one or more torcs. The torc was an ornament for women until the 4th century BC, when it became an attribute of warriors. Celtic torc disappears in the Migration Period, but during the Viking Age, torc-style metal necklaces came back into fashion.
